    Fish Species of the Upper Ottawa River

    The upper Ottawa River near Nangor has many species of sportfish to make your fishing excursion one you will remember for years to come. Except for spawning season, many species are caught year-round at Nangor. These are some of the most popular fish in our area.

Bullhead

Bullhead
Bullheads are are members of the catfish family and most easily identified by their long whisker-like barbels that protrude from the mouth of the catfish. These are easily caught in our area using worms or minnows.

Carp

Carp
Carp are around but not plentiful like other species. Still, anglers in our area catch them. We have seen many weighing in at well over 30 pounds.

Channel Catfish
Channel catfish are most easily identified by their long whisker-like barbels that protrude from the mouth of the catfish. These are easily caught using worms or minnows.

Crappie

These are caught year-round in our area. Effective bait and lures are minnows, small jigs, worms and grubs.

Largemouth Bass

A popular sportfish in the warm months but are rarely caught in winter. Popular bait includes all kinds of lures and crankbaits.

Muskie

A popular sportfish in summer and autumn. We have seen some giants around Nangor. They is not an endangered species but it is reccommended to return these to the water after catching one.

Northern Pike

Probably the fish of choice to most who fish at Nangor, only because of it's potential size. Bait includes minnows, jigs and pretty well anything in your tackle box.

Perch

These fish are the most abundant at Nangor. If targeting these fish, anglers can always catch their limit. Popular lures and bait include small jigs, spinners, worms and grubs.

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass
A popular sportfish in the warm months but are rarely caught in winter. The best bait is almost anything in your tackle box.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon
Many are caught while targeting walleye and channel cats. They are an endangered species in Ontario and must be quickly photographed and returned to the water.

Sunfish are great if you are taking children fishing. These colorful fish are abundant and easily caught from shore or the Nangor dock.
