2005 Blind Anglers International
Tournament a huge success

BAIT Derby Results: The 2005 Blind Anglers International
Tournament held at the Nangor resort in Westmeath last
weekend was yet another huge success. BAIT is a fabulous
organization which pairs up professional sport fishermen with
visually impaired men and women for a weekend of fishing
and fun. The tournament's goal is to demonstrate abilities rather
than disabilities and has served as a great mechanism for
rehabilitation. This year's tournament saw a turnout of more
than 75 blind and pro anglers, with a final tally of 123 fish tipping
the scales at 249.95 lbs. Among the winners was the team of
pro angler Wincell Spence and blind anglers David and Penny
Leclair with the biggest overall catch. The largest pike award
went to pro Ray McFarlane and angler Basil Alexander with a
9.42-lb. specimen. Thanks to Jeff Lanthier for the update.

Next weekend's Blind Anglers International Tournament (BAIT) at the beautiful Nangor Resort is perhaps the most inspirational fishing event of the year.

The 18th annual event is renowned for "hooking up" professional anglers with legally blind men and women for a weekend of fish, fun and excitement. The tournament's goal is to demonstrate abilities rather than disabilities, and has succeeded in doing so for more than 17 years.

"It is a fabulous opportunity for visually impaired anglers to learn a new skill or to rekindle an old passion, and serves as a mechanism for rehabilitation," said event organizer Al Page.

And what better location to make it all happen than at the exceptionally-groomed Nangor Resort, a short drive from the city in Westmeath. Each year, the event brings together individuals who face similar challenges and encourages a renewed self-confidence among the visually impaired.

BAIT expects a turnout of more than 75 blind and professional anglers on May 26-28, along with countless volunteers from the Lions Clubs, St. John's Ambulance, the CNIB, and the Canadian Guide Dog School.

A tip of the hat goes out to all the professional anglers who selflessly provide their own boat, fuel and fishing equipment and, more importantly, their patience and expertise, to the fabulous tournament. It is great to see how professional anglers and volunteers have come together over the years to make a difference in the lives of the visually impaired participants.
